Borgu (Batonum: Barutêm) is a landlocked country placed between the Julian Mountains and the Niger River. It borders Iorubaland to the south, Guinea to the west, Gurma and Songhay to the north, and Niger to the east. Niqui, the capital, is the seat of one of the only elective monarchies in the world. While largely an agricultural nation, the southern city of Queragooro has become a commercial and industrial hub since the Borgu's independence from Portugal and the discovery of iron reserves in the 1960s.
