Spanish (español) is a Romance language spoken as the principal language in ten states and used in a lesser capacity by several others. In order to distinguish it from the other languages of Spain, the country in which it originated, is it sometimes called Castillan (castellano). It is spoken almost exclusively in Spain and its former colonies across the Americas, Asia, and Africa, most notably Mexico, which boasts the largest Spanish-speaking population and most influential Hispanophone media industry in the world.

Due to the cosmopolitanism of the worldwide Spanish-speaking community, the organization La Hispanidad was established in 1932 in part to strengthen linguistic bonds between these Hispanophone nations. In combination with the rise of republicanism and the widespread rejection of the antiquated standards of the 18th-century Royal Spanish Academy, La Hispanidad and its various institutions have become the de facto principal regulators of the Spanish language since the Great War.
