List of French leaders
This is a page listing the heads of state, heads of government, and occupation leaders of continental France from the establishment of the Bourbon dynasty in 1589 to modern day.
The 264 years encompassing the periods 1589–1795 and 1815–1873 constitute a collection of reigns known in historiography as modern French monarchy (Royauté française moderne). Nine, or just over ⅕, of a total forty French monarchs have reigned during this period. Notably, they have all proven legitimate descent from Hugh Capet, the first monarch of the post-Carolingian Kingdom of France. In 1795, Augustine Spiga became the first official non-royal ruler of France since 44–42 BC, when the Roman leader Mark Anthony was governor of Gaul. Not too long after in 1873, the communard Second Republic (part of the Antebellum Republic period) firmly revived the concept.
