Modern Malakka was founded in the waning days of the East Indies Crisis ;throughout the conflict, the city of Malakka was a major administrative and military hub and had been under Dutch control for nearly 300 years. The region was the site of the largest mass-military defection in modern history with 3 Dutch KNIL divisions led by Major-general Pieter Hendrik van Oyen refusing Dutch central command orders to retreat from their position in May of 1976 during the East Indies Crisis. What followed was the start of modern Malakka. Under his leadership, the rouge divisions and their meager air force used their contacts to stock up and fight off repeated attempts by the EILF to seize the city of Malakka. After a series of conferences with local Malaysian- Chinese leaders & militias Van Oyen & his rouge KNIL divisions officially joined forces with the nascent 'Free-state movement' and was instrumental in the creation of the joint-Malakkan central command whose explicate aim was to create a anti-EILF, free-state around Malakka to serve as a nation-state for the Malay-Chinese population of the region. Eventually after several years of fighting & negotiations with the EILF a seize fire agreement was obtained in September of 1978 after which the Malakkan Free State was declared.▼
