Establishment of the Latium Republic
The region of what is now the Latium Republic was once part of the Papal domains. In 1901, the Central Italian region was hit with one of the worst famines the region has ever seen, called the Latial Famine. This led to many bread revolts in the cities over the course of 1903-1908. The papacy's army was overwhelmed by these revolts. This was exacerbated by Venice supporting some of the revolts in Rome. The coup de grâce was delivered when Venetian Invasion of the Papal Adriatic in 1908, destroying the papacy's army in the process. With a weakened military, Rome succumbed to the revolts. In the same year, the Latium Republic was declared.

The Latial Famines of 1901 to 1903 had triggered popular revolts in the Papal States. Pope Innocent XVII became the main target of the public's wrath due to his and his predecessors' administration of the States. Innocent XVII proceeded to die in 1904. One of his favorite cardinals, Remondo di Muzio, was swiftly elected by the College of Cardinals as Boniface X soon after.
When the rebels took Rome, the pope fled the city. Upon hearing of the news, Spain jumped at the chance to offer to host a papal government-in-exile in Spain. This gained Spain huge prestige within the Catholic world.

A few weeks later, Boniface X was assassinated by radical republican Jacopo Marzullo in the Ponte district of Rome. Marzullo was allegedly in collaboration with an unnamed bishop. Soon after the incident, the members of the Roman Curia were expelled while the College of Cardinals was thrown into chaos.
